Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Tasting Notes
Châteauneuf-du-Pape (CdP) is a French wine blend from the Southern Rhone region of France. Viticulture in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region dates back to Gallo-Roman times, with vines cultivated in the area for centuries for local consumption and church use. The golden age of Châteauneuf-du-Pape began with the Avignon Papacy. In 1309, Pope Clement V relocated the papacy from Rome to Avignon and recognized the potential of the surrounding lands for viticulture. His successor, John XXII, further promoted the vineyards, built a fortified château on the heights of the village, and established Châteauneuf-du-Pape as the summer residence of the popes. The name of the wine literally translating to “The Pope’s New Castle”. Chatteauneuf-du-Pape (CdP) has evolved to a French wine blend that can officially use 13-18 grape varieties however the wine is dominated by Grenache (over 50%) followed by smaller percentages of Shiraz and Mourvedre. It is Southern Rhone’s most iconic wine and is known for its rich fruity flavours, warmth spicey notes and great aging potential.
🎯 Overall Character - Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape is best described as rich, ripe, herbal, and warm. A Mediterranean red with depth, spice, and warmth. It balances lush fruit, earthy complexity, and wild herbs in a way few other regions can match.
🍒 On the Nose (Aromatics) - Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape is a mix of ripe fruit, earth and herbal aromas. Red Fruit aromas of raspberry, plum and strawberry dominate. Secondary aromas of leather, game and earthy tones as it evolves as well as herbal notes of the region’s wild herbs: sage, rosemary and lavender. These aromatics are a hallmark of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape and intensify with age.
🍷 On the Palate - Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape is a full body wine with soft to moderate tannins, low to medium acidity and high alcohol levels of 14.5-15.5% ABV. Primary flavours are ripe raspberry, red plum and strawberry compote. The fruit flavours are complemented with notes of earth, white pepper, cinnamon and wild herbs. As the wine matures, flavours shift toward leather, game and earth. The finish can be sweet‑tinged of ripe fruit and elevated alcohol or savoury, depending on vintage. Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape is famous for its “garrigue” character. This is, the blend of wild Mediterranean herbs (sage, rosemary, lavender) that infuses both aroma and palate. Since the tannins and acidity are moderate, the texture of the wine is round, supple and velvety on the palate.
🕰️ Aging Profile - Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape typically ages 10–20 years depending on producer and vintage. Some exception vintages can age 30+years. With age, expect more earth, leather, game and dried herbs aromas and flavours.
