Tasting Notes

Rioja wine has a rich history in Spain spanning over 2,000 years, from Phoenician and Roman origins to modern international acclaim. Today it is Spain’s benchmark red wine, built primarily on the Tempranillo grape and at times blended with Garnacha, Graciano, or Mazuelo adding spice, perfume, and colour.

🎯 Overall Character - Rioja is best described as red‑fruited, silky texture, oak‑spiced, structured, and elegant. A Tempranillo‑driven wine that evolves from fresh and juicy to deep, dried fruits, leathery, and complex with age. It’s one of the world’s great aging wines, and one of the most versatile for pairing.

🍒 On the Nose (Aromatics) - Rioja shows a signature mix of red fruit, oak spice, and mature, savory notes. Aromatics include strawberries, cherries, raspberries, chocolate, stewed fruit, coffee, and prune in older wines. Also vanilla, spice and tobacco from oak aging. Younger Rioja wines (Genérico/Joven) are bright and fruit forward, while aged wines (Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva) show deeper oak‑derived aromatics.

🍷 On the Palate - Rioja is medium to full‑bodied, high tannin, balanced acidity and oak‑influenced in most categories. Flavours include red cherry, plum, vanilla, spice, tobacco and chocolate, coffee, prune in mature wines. Younger Rioja has flavours of fresh fruit while older, aged Rioja’s tend to have flavours of fried fruit, oak, spice and leather.

🕰️ Aging Profile - Rioja has 4 aging categories:

  • Genérico / Joven - little to no oak aging. Pure red fruit, fresh and juicy. Best enjoyed young typically within 1-2 years.

  • Crianza - aged 1 year in oak. Red fruit + subtle oak; balanced and approachable. Best enjoyed 1-5 years.

  • Reserva - 3 years aging with 1+ in oak. More structure, deeper fruit, refined oak, vanilla and spice. Best enjoyed 5-10 years.

  • Gran Reserva - 5 years aging, 2 years in oak. Complex, elegant, dried fruit, vanilla, leather, tobacco and coffee. Can be aged 15+ years.

Food Pairing

Rioja’s structure, acidity, and oak influence make it one of the most versatile red wines at the table. Lamb is the ultimate Rioja pairing however other Spanish flavors (pimentón, peppers, garlic, saffron) are perfect matches. Pairings depend on the wine’s age: Joven/Crianza vs. Reserva/Gran Reserva

🥩 1. Lamb (The Signature Pairing) - Roast lamb, Lamb cutlets grilled over vine clippings, Lamb shanks, Rogan josh, Shepherd’s pie, Lancashire hotpot and moussaka. Tempranillo’s tannin + acidity + savory spice harmonize beautifully with lamb’s richness.

🍖 2. Pork, Chorizo & Spanish Classics - Rioja loves dishes built on paprika, garlic, peppers, and cured meats. Ideal pairings include Pork loin, Chorizo and chickpea stew, Jamón Ibérico, and Tapas (especially with Crianza). Oak‑aged Rioja mirrors the smoky, spicy, savory flavors of the food.

🍗 3. Grilled & Roasted Meats (Reserva & Gran Reserva) - Aged Rioja has deeper tannin and oak, making it ideal for richer meats. Pairs well with NY strip steak, Beef tenderloin, Lamb chops, Venison stew, Sausages and Veal chops. Reserva/Gran Reserva’s leather, coconut, chocolate, and spice complement char and roasted flavours.

🍔 4. Everyday Foods (Crianza) - Crianza Rioja is fruitier and fresher, perfect for casual meals. Good pairings include Hamburgers, Meat sandwiches, Pasta, Pork tenderloin, Cabbage rolls and Tapas. Crianza’s tart red fruit and moderate oak match lighter, everyday dishes.

🌶️ 5. Spicy Dishes (Surprisingly Good) - Modern Rioja styles can handle spice better than expected. Dishes such as modern Indian cuisine and spicy pork tacos pair well. Fruit + acidity cools heat; oak adds depth.

🧀 6. Cheese Pairings - Rioja pairs beautifully with Spanish cheeses. Best matches are Manchego cheese (classic pairing), Goat cheese stuffed peppers and Dark chocolate.
